As from April 01 2024 changes have been implemented for WHS:
Â
WHS changes – The changes are applicable from 1 April 2024. For our competitions the changes will impact several stroke play/stableford events as follows:
- Handicaps will be adjusted to a par equivalent and percentages will be taken from exact course handicaps rather than rounded course handicaps.
- For individual events the handicap calculation will be: handicap index x (slope rating/113), then + (course rating-par), then unrounded number x 95% for singles events. This is then rounded for the playing handicap.
- For better ball stableford events it is the same calculation but x 85% at the end and then rounded for the playing handicap.
- For greensomes it is the same calculation but x 60% and 40% respectively, with these amounts added together before rounding, and then rounded for the playing handicap.
- For mixed greensomes there is an added adjustment to the men’s or women’s handicap if the par for the courses is different.
- Four ball better ball match play event handicaps will be calculated from full course handicap. Players will work out their course handicap and the shots given or received will be 90% of the difference in course handicaps taken from the lowest handicap.
England golf have provided a calculator on their website to assist calculations. While it is called mixed tee calculator, it can also be used for same sex events by setting the tee markers to the same for all players (so useful for Hawtree, Clapham and Mitchell Thomson). https://www.englandgolf.org/2024-whs-update-resources
Â
Score returns – In addition, four ball better ball knock out stableford events – Siemens Bowl and Whitewebbs – the hosting club will be required to input the scores to the WHS after the match. The impact will be a handicap reduction consideration where a pair scores over 42 points – the WHS has a built-in way to assess holes where players did not score and compute scores accordingly. Clubs will need to arrange for the scores to be input on the day of play.Â

If unsure about any of this or struggling with calculator do feel free to contact the NAPGC Secretary  or the competition organiser.
